Research Abstract

Abstract The research is entitled " The Effectiveness of Communicative Tasks in Developing Some Reading Comprehension Skills of First Year Secondary School Students" Reading is one of the most important skills of a foreign language to secondary school students. The skills which are being investigated in this study are "skimming and scanning". Despite the importance of those two skills, they are not given proper attention in the set books of the secondary stage "Excel in English" for first year. The research is divided into seven chapters: - In Chapter One, the importance and nature of skimming and scanning has been stated. - In Chapter Two, the review of literature has given spotlights on the latest studies and a comparison between them and this study in question. - In Chapter Three, a criterion has been Designed for determining tasks aiming at developing "skimming and scanning". The aim of the criterion is to show to what extent the skills of reading "skimming and scamming" are developed through the communicative tasks. - In Chapter Four, the criterion has been applied to the five units "6, 7,8,9,10" in "Excel in English – Book One". - In Chapter Five, discussion and interpretations of results have been dealt with. - In Chapter Six, suggested and additional tasks to the present syllabus in secondary school have been made. - Chapter Seven, deals with the final summary, conclusion, bibliography and appendices. In the end, it is worth mentioning that information transfer tasks "Graphs and Tables" are important for developing skimming and scanning according to the communicative approach.
