Master Title

“The Effect of Computerized Tests on the Performance of Fourth Year English Department Students at Beni-Suef Faculty of Education on Listening Tasks”

Master Abstract

ABSTRACT This study is sought to investigate the effect of computerized tests on the performance of 4th English Department Students at Beni-Suef Faculty of Education on Listening Tasks. Listening comprehension, and consequently, listening comprehension assessment has been given the utmost attention worldwide and in Egypt. The study, therefore, aimed at proposing listening comprehension computerized assessment training software that may improve the listening comprehension skills among English department students through checking their performance on the listening tasks, and checking the effects of computerized listening comprehension assessment packages on enhancing performance on the listening comprehension component of computerized tests. Sixty 4th year students participated in this study. They were randomly selected and assigned for the experimental group (N=30) and the control group (N=30). Findings of the study revealed that the software designed for the purpose of developing listening comprehension, has been effective in the development of specific listening skills for the university learners. The t-test results revealed statistically significant differences between the post-test mean scores in all listening skills listening for the gist, listening for specific information, guess the meaning of unfamiliar words from context, and use the context to make predictions and the total score in favour of the experimental group.

Researcher: Mohamed Hanafy Mahmoud Institution: Faculty of Education, Beni-Sueif University The main purpose of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of a proposed computerized content-based instruction program for developing reading comprehension among third year primary education EFL majors at Beni-Sueif Faculty of Education. In order to achieve such an objective, tools of the study were prepared. A questionnaire of reading comprehension skills was prepared, validated and put in a final form. A pre-post computerized reading comprehension skills test was prepared, validated, piloted, and administered both before and after teaching the suggested program in order to test its effectiveness in developing third year primary education EFL majors reading comprehension. A suggested computerized program aiming at using content-based instruction for developing reading comprehension skills was designed. A course evaluation questionnaire was administered to find how far students were satisfied with the computerized content-based instruction program. The study used the two groups pre-post test design. The sample of the study included 60 students (males and females) selected randomly from third year primary education EFL majors at Beni-Sueif Faculty of Education. They were distributed randomly between the experimental group (N=30) and the control group (N=30) and randomly assigned to the two groups. The experimental group studied the suggested program, and the control group had the regular classes. Terminal means, standard deviations and t.test results were used in the statistical analysis of the data .The experiment lasted for seven weeks. Findings of the study revealed that the computerized content-based instruction program designed for the purpose of developing some reading comprehension skills was effective in the development of specific reading comprehension skills for the third year primary education EFL majors at Beni-Sueif Faculty of Education .The t-test analysis of the data for the pre and post administration of the computerized reading comprehension skills test revealed statistically significant differences favouring the post-test in all reading comprehension skills namely; identifying main idea, extracting specific information from the reading text, guessing the meaning of words from context, and summarizing a reading text and the total score was in favour of the experimental group.It was recommended to use computerized content-based instruction for developing reading comprehension. Suggestions for further studies were provided.
