the Psychometric Properties of the secondary school test grades

Master Abstract

Summary The evaluation process and its used mean such as exams and tests are considered an important and effective entry ( approach ) in repairing and developing the educational process and its different sides . Also , because the general secondary school exams have their own importance and considered the connection between the general education and the university studies . So , this study aims to answer the following two principals questions . The problem of the study :- & The First main question : What are the Psychometric Properties of the secondary school test grades ? These properties are , represented in : Reliability Coefficients – Validity Coefficients – cutting score Consistency – Facility Coefficients – Efficiency coefficient – Inflation – the predictive Contribution of every exam in predicting the total degrees and finally . & The second main question : Are the secondary school test grades fair ( not biased ) ? This question is subdivided into the following sub – questions :- 1- Is there any relationship between the Psychometric Properties of secondary school test grades and : - School year . - Gender . - School site . - School kind . - Age . - Subjects . - The especial . 2- What is the kind of this relationship ( if it found ) ? The Study Sample : The study sample included the results of the secondary school exams in Bani-Suef overrate in 1991/1999 . The size of this sample was deter-minded by the Kohein approach and the American association approach and the sample individuals were chosen by using the categorical random method . The sample size reached 360 individual every year . The procedures and the Statistical treatment of the study: To answer the First main question : - The reliability coefficients are estimated by using Hills and Alfa modified ( the third from ) . - The discrimination coefficients and intrinsic validity coefficients are estimated as validity indicators . - Absolute Difference averages are estimated as cut score consistency indicators . - Modified standard facility coefficients are estimated by statistical tables . - Standard errors are estimated as indicators of efficiency coefficients . - Inflation is estimated by testing significance differences among obtained score averages and true scores averages. - Multiple Stepwise regression analysis is used to estimate contribution proportion in predicting . - Factor analysis ( principal components ) and axes are conducted by Varymax procedure to determine factor structure . To answer the Second main question : - To answer first sub-question of second main question ,T-test , one direction analysis of variance and Sheiffet test is used . - To answer the second sub-question of second main question ETA square test is used . The Results Of The Study : The study results show : - - Decline of reliability coefficients of secondary school test grades generally . - Decline of validity coefficients of secondary school test grades . - Improvement of cut score consistency in 1999 rather than in 1991 generally . - Facility coefficients were average . - There is no grade inflation . - Varying in contribution proportions of subjects . - Secondary school test grades have factorial structure . - There is some bias in psychometric properties to some study variables . These results were discussed altogether with the suggestion of some studies .

Therefore, computer-assisted instruction (CAI for short) has become an area of focus for many researchers; some of them have investigated its effects on achievement (Williams, et al.,2002; Bayraktar, S., 2002; Ardac, et al., 2002; Mechling and Others, 2002). The findings from such research have been contradictory in conclusion; some of the researchers have detected differences between the groups that studied after CAI and the traditional methodologies of teachings to the advantage of CAI whilst others did not detect such differences as far as achievement was concerned. The ambiguities and obscurities in research findings as such may be attributable to tacit differences between the subjects in their cognitive and mental aptitudes as well as in differences in personality types (which could be termed cognitive factors versus non-cognitive factors) in the samples used in such research studies. This would invite us to investigate the factors attributable to success or failure in CAI which have been termed cognitive and non-cognitive factors of learning. However, and despite there are some studies that have investigated these variables of cognition and personality variations effective in the success of failure of CAI programmes, most of these studies have been conducted in non-Arab and non-Egyptian contexts such as the studies by Philip (2000), Lee (2000), and (Hall,2000). Studies in the Arabic language contexts are very scanty or only qualitatively descriptive in nature, and they only touch upon the instructional usage of computers (Abdel Mawgood, 1996) or they only dealt with some psychological aspects of CAI as the effects of CAI on anxiety levels (Fareer, 1998). The Problem of the Study: Based on the framework above described, the problem of the present study can be tacitly formed in the following questions: 1. What are the cognitive factors associated with success in CAI? Off this question branch the following sub-questions: a. Is there a relationship between computer aptitude and success in CAI? b. Is there a relationship between intelligence and success in CAI? c. Is there a relationship between the cognitive style (here selected field-dependence vs. independence learning style) and success in CAI? 2. Is success in CAI predictable based on cognitive factors of intelligence, learning style and computer aptitude? 3. Is there a relationship between success in CAI and the pre-assessment of attitudes towards computers, computer-anxiety and achievement motivation? 4. Is success in CAI predictable based on non-cognitive factors in pre-assessment of computer attitude, computer anxiety, achievement motivation, and gender? 5. Is there a relationship between success in CAI and post-assessment of computer attitudes, computer-anxiety and achievement motivation? 6. Are there CAI success differences engendered by gender differences? 7. What cognitive (computer aptitudes, comparison, synthesis, process, mathematic logic, sequence, total score, cognitive style {field-(in)dependence} and intelligence) and non-cognitive factors (computer attitude, computer anxiety, achievement motivation, students' genders) contribute the most in the success in CAI programmes? Significance of the Study: The study is deemed significant for the following reasons: 1. This study is conducted in line with the international trend of computerized education followed in advanced countries in all stages of education; trends include computer-based learning and internet-based instruction; 2. There is a paucity in research studies in Arabic which may have dealt with the success factors associated with computer-assisted instruction though the approach is the topic of the hour internationally and here in Egypt. 3. The findings of the study may contribute to enhancing and developing new courseware that can be effective for teaching and learning. 4. The findings of the study may contribute to constructing new psychometric scales which could be new assets to the psychometric assessment literature. 5. The findings of the study may contribute to enhancing selection and educational counseling criteria in the field of computer-based instruction. Objectives of the Study: This study aims at the following: 1. uncovering the relationship between computer aptitude, intelligence and cognitive style in contributing towards CAI; 2. uncovering the relationship between achievement motivation, computer attitude, computer anxiety and gender of the subjects; 3. uncovering cognitive factors contributing towards predicting success in CAI programmes; 4. uncovering non-cognitive factors contributing towards predicting success in CAI programmes; 5. uncovering the most effective cognitive and non-cognitive factors contributing towards predicting success in CAI programmes; 6. developing a CAI courseware in educational psychology based on the learning theory of error and trial for the experimentation. Sampling: 71 students participated in the study. 28 were males and 18 females. The subjects of the study have been drawn from the general branch juniors of the Math (53 students of both genders) and Biology (18 students of both genders) departments of the Faculty of Education at Beni Suef in the academic year 2003-2004. Instruments of the Study: The following instruments have been used in this research: o Computer Aptitude Test developed by the researcher; o Embedded Figures Scale by Al-Sheik and Al-Sharkawy (2002); o Raven Intelligence Assessment adapted by Abu Hatab et al., 1977; o Computer Attitude Test developed by the researcher; o Achievement Motivation Assessment developed by Al-A'asar et al., 1983; o The CAI courseware on educational psychology ( a unit on learning by error and trial) developed by the researcher; o Courseware Evaluation Checklist developed by the researcher; o Achievement Test for the Courseware used developed by the researcher. Statistical Treatment Methodologies: The following statistics are used in this study: 1. Partial Correlations and the Pearson r ; 2. Correlation ration; 3. Dimension III of the Computer Aptitude Scale in its total score and the cognitive style are the two most important predictors of success in CAI programmes; field-independent learners over achieved field dependents and intelligent subjects; intelligence was not a factor of weight in predicting success in CAI programmes based on the regression analyses; only computer aptitudes and learning styles have interpreted 20.9 % of achievement variations; 2. CAI affected and was affected by computer attitudes and computer anxiety and achievement motivation; 3. low-levels of computer attitudes and achievement motivation as pretested were positively correlated with success in CAI programmes as posttested, whereas high levels of computer anxiety were negatively correlated with CAI; 4. The most non-cognitive predictors in CAI success as pretested on the computer anxiety, motivation, gender scales have been computer anxiety, motivation, gender which in toto have interpreted 42.8% of the variation on post-assessment of achievement in the courseware. 5. No significant correlation was detected between high levels of computer attitudes, and achievement motivation as pretested by their respective scales and success in CAI as posttested on the courseware achievement test; also of no significance was the correlation between low anxiety levels and CAI success; 6. Non-cognitive factors, i.e., gender, motivation and anxiety have contributed the most (more than did cognitive factors, i.e., total score of computer aptitude, learning style) in predicting success in CAI programmes. The findings of this research have been extensively discussed and interpreted in their context in the thesis with the appropriate recommendations and further research proposals having been forwarded at the end.
